IOOi with Billy Martin will perform 2nd set after Dafnis Prieto's ensemble
Merkin Concert Hall

Dafnis Prieto / Billy Martin:
Different Drummers

Percussion juggernaut Dafnis Prieto arrived in New York from Cuba in 1999 and tore into the jazz scene with polyrhythmic energy and an appetite for a vast array of musical styles, from jazz to Latin to avant-garde. Prieto will lead his Absolute Quintet, a combination of violin, sax, cello, piano and Hammond organ, in a set of jazz chamber music. Multitalented percussionist and composer Billy Martin (of Medeski Martin and Wood) has a unique mix of musical influences. His beats can range from nod-your-head funk to exploratory rhythms on unconventional instruments. Martin brings a unit consisting of the hottest innovators on the creative music scene: Ikue Mori, DJ Olive, and Okkyung Lee form the group IOOi, an electric-free-out-jazz-new music ensemble.

IOOi (Ikue, Okkyung, Olive and illy) is an experimental quartet utilizing electronics, cello and percussion. This group was formed by percussionist Billy Martin (2005) following Ikue Mori’s request for him to perform at John Zorn's downtown performance space The Stone. This group collectively-improvise-compose music, in-concert. Tonight's program will also include 2 of Martin's recent video works: "Veve 40" (2008) and "Jelly" (2006) which IOOi will create a soundtrack for. Animator David Gottlieb (Industrial Light and Magic) was asked to collaborate in order to realize Martin's original line drawing (Veve 40) as a motion graphic score. This particular animation was also intended as an exhibition in a multiple-part series which Martin will create permanent scores for each. "Jelly" was filmed and edited by Martin at the Long Beach Aquarium in California.
